ABHYANGA is the process of rubbing medicated oil over the entire body; it is one of the Ayurvedic massage techniques which uses in the same time the stimulation of the marmas, the main energetic points of the body. Abhyanga can be done as part of the daily routine or as the external oleation component of Snehana, a preparatory therapy (Poorvakarma) for Panchakarma. This kind of oleation serves as well as a preventive measure against many ailments related to Vata Dosha.
The oil that penetrates through the skin during Abhyanga helps loosen excessive doshas from the deeper tissues and bring them into the digestive tract from where they can be eliminated through vamana (therapeutic vomiting), virechana (herbal purgation) or by basti (medicated enema). Abhyanga, as preparation for Panchakarma is commonly done by two therapists working simultaneusly on both sides of the body, creating in this way brain wave coherence associated with deepened peace and a state of great relaxation.
