NASYA is one of the Pancha karma procedures, a cleansing therapy for the head channels. Its main role is to eliminate the excessive doshas accumulated in the throat, nostrils, sinuses and in the head. Prana, the vital energy which sustains the motor and sensorial functions of our body is generated by the movement of the air through the nostrils. When the passage of the air through one or both nostrils is blocked, our head, and mainly the brain lacks the necessary energy to perform its functions properly.
The application of medicated oil through the nostrils, such in Nasya, frees the flow of prana which consequently influences the superior cerebral functions. Nasya can be cleansing when it implies the application of medicated oils, ghee, herbal decoctions used to act as purgatives and cleansers in the head and sinuses. Nourishing Nasya implies the application of medicated oils and herbs that have nourishing and tissue regenerative properties. This treatment is recommended in case of mental, psychological and neurological problems, anxiety attacks, Parkinson, depression, hearing and seeing problems, headaches, conjunctivitis, sinusitis and epilepsy.
